Today we began with the politics thing. The extremely erratic discussion ended with a guy from Congo defending Sverigedemokraterna, aka the Thieving Immigrant Bastards Go Home party, while the teacher stared in some kind of fascinated disbelief.

Then we had adverb practice! We were divided into two groups - men and women. "Write down adverbs that describe what you would like in a partner! In groups!" said the teacher hopefully. "So what would your ideal husband be like?" I was asked. "A lesbian," I said, rather sulkily, I admit, because this is a point I have now been trying to make for some time. Apparently a hilarious joke! Ha ha how she kids us. Like any nice girl would actually be with a woman! Ha ha. So anyway, they got on with a list while I wished for tea (preferably with booze in, by that stage); they would like their husbands to be rich, strong, brave, manly, handsome, etc. Then we switched lists to see what the two different groups had written! Do you want to guess what the first two things on the list the guys had written were? Do you?

"Modest" and "patient".

It continued in much the same vein. "Shy" and "young" also made appearances.

Now I am home, and still feeling vaguely traumatised. Can I please have that tea with booze in? Or maybe just booze?

Yes, it's true, it would be irrationally optimistic to think you couldn't have political disagreements with other people, but I always feel more comfortable with a more mundane conservativism where it seems to me that the evil consequences could be unclear to the people with the views, like about things like, oh, nuclear power or public transport or even people wanting to cut social services, than with the truly out-there ones who are unapologetically racist or "stop ALL the immigration" or "no abortion EVEN TO SAVE HER LIFE" or whatever, where it just seems completely impossible to be unaware and so then it's like they just HAVE to be that evil. And that I just find rather scary.

Eeeeeeesh. I can't figure out what you'd need to do to make the point more clearly at this stage, beyond making out with Val in public.

I think skip the tea and move straight to the G&Ts...

My wife had a friend at work my first year here who was really really determinedly dense about this. Finnish, you see, doesn't have gendered pronouns, just the one word hän which refers to any person, and so in order to come out you have to go out of your way to use words like 'girlfriend', 'woman', etc. And this woman kept assuming I (the then-girlfriend) was a boyfriend no matter how many times Wax came out! She would correct her every single time with 'girl', 'woman', 'girlfriend', etc, and it never stuck. This went on for probably six months or more and she never did get the point across.

Skip the tea. Straight to the booze. Preferably in combinations you like. Possibly before class, so maybe they'll get the hint.

Also, "modest"? Really? Patient I can understand, and I need, but modest?

That's rather interesting...in a "Sure you're not stuck in the idealized 1950s?" sort of manner, which is not very interesting at all.

What arguments did the guy from Congo use in his defence of the super-right-wing party? D: Why would an immigrant defend said party...? idgi DDDDD:

idk, I recognise your reason(s) for dismay at the list of 'female' traits, but personally I am more DDDDDDDD: at the male traits...:| The whole thing is really a gender fail :|
