The second half of Röd. In this case I'm providing slightly more extensive notes on translation for at least some of the songs, because I've only just been working on it and hey, someone might be interested in how some concepts translate or don't, for example, or how I reached my crazy linguistic conclusions. (& at least if I'm wrong you can see how creatively I'm wrong.)

7. Idioter (Idiots)

on youtube

snabba avslut snabba svar

English lyrics:

Where were you when they condemned me?
Where were you when I took my punishment?
You who have always defended idiots
You were there when I was crowned king
Knelt when I needed a dog
Best to be on the safe side of the wall
to cover yourself, a different colour cage
for us idiots
You said that the fear goes away
but that anxiety remains
it makes you uncertain when you need
fast conclusions fast answers
You said that the fear swings slowly for us
between real and false
between truth and lie
We are idiots
I don't believe in anything I hear
I don't believe in anything I read
I believe I never at any time
have believed in believing
I say a prayer when no-one sees me
You also have dark secrets
Best to be on the safe side of faith
to cover yourself to not burn bridges
such things idiots do
You said that the fear...

Notes: "pendlar" is literally "pendulate", i.e. move like a pendulum, but I don't care if the dictionary knows the word "pendulate" exists, it's still a completely ridiculous word in English and I refuse to use it. Other than pendulums, things like commuter trains (or in fact commuters) also do this. "Pendeltåg" means commuter train. You learn something every day! (OK, I actually learnt this the first time I had to go to a Stockholm suburb courtesy of migrationsverket, but you know.)

8. Svarta linjer (Black Lines)

on youtube

Swedish lyrics:

Svarta linjer
Det är allt jag ser
Svarta linjer
som håller oss två kvar
i vår bur
Svarta linjer
Det är allt vi har
Minns du hur det var
mitt i vintern
Svarta linjer
Vita linjer
I en tunnel ser jag ljus
Vita linjer
som en spikrakt spår till Gud
om man tror på sånt
Vita linjer
som inte leder någonstans
Vita linjer
Vi har en mikroskopisk chans
att bli gamla
tillsammans

English lyrics:

Black lines
They are all I see
Black lines
which hold us two still
in our cage
Black lines
They are all we have
Black lines
Do you remember how it was
in the depths of winter
Black lines
(Think twice, always think twice)
Along an ash-grey horizon
(Think twice, consider what you do)
Black lines
(Everything has a cost, always think twice)
Like tracer lights over the town
(think twice, always think twice)
the spring comes
Black lines
(must think forward, must think big)
I stubbornly hang on
(must become something, must get something done)
Black lines
(Everything has a cost, always think twice)
We lie like little children
(Think twice, consider what you do)
We shake it off
White lines
In a tunnel I see lights
White lines
like a dead-straight path to God
if one believes in that sort of thing
White lines
which don't lead anywhere
White lines
We have a microscopic chance
to become old
together

notes: "spårljus" is an odd one. literally it could mean track light, trace light, or trail light, and all the top results if you search spårljus have to do with weaponry - spårljusammunition, primarily. I don't know enough about weaponry to render that into English with certainty but I believe it means tracer bullets, which is to say, bullets with a pyrotechnic charge so that one can see their trajectory. spårljus in itself definitely implies a light to keep track of something. It could also theoretically be something like a searchlight, though there's a more proper word for that (sökerljus, I think) - which, this being Kent, is no guarantee that it isn't.

(& also there's no way to tell if ljus is singular or plural in some cases since it takes no ending. The forms are differentiated if you add the definite article to them, so "ljuset" would be "the light" and "ljusen" would be "the lights", but otherwise, you're on yer own. This also applies to "I en tunnel jag ser ljus", which could be car lights or the lights on the roof of a tunnel - which is what I've run with - but given that we progress directly to dead-straight paths to God this is perhaps not the only interpretation.)

&

"kvar" has no direct English translation, most often meaning something like left/remaining in everyday conversation; in this case it has connotations of non-motion. I'm not sure how one really should say it - "behind" or "back" would maybe also be valid - but the people concerned certainly aren't moving anywhere.

9. Ensamheten (The Loneliness)

on youtube

Sekelskiftesvillan gapar tom
Man skymtar fönstren bakom röda löv
Jag minns din pappas bibliotek
I err centrumkors virvlar snön
det blåser snålt
genom ensamhushållens dubbla lås
och som Sverige sover villor skogar elljusspår
Sextusen utegransljus mot ensamheten
Ensamheten
ensamheten
Hårt mot hårt mot ensamheten
Ett helt nytt ljus ger oss nytt hopp
men även skuggorna blir större nu
Inget är sig längre likt
I din värld av mörker syns dina brister mina fel
som sprickor där ljus kan tränga in
Jag inser plötsligt kärlek får man bara se
när tak och väggar rasar in igen i ensamheten
Ensamheten
ensamheten

English lyrics:

You scrape the windows again
I am the passenger, it is you who drives
This town bleeds to death, everything is shut
You talk about work, I long for home again
It is so hard to hear what you are saying
What is it you actually want to say?
The turn of the century villa gapes empty
One glimpses the windows behind red leaves
I remember your father's library
At a crossing in the centre of town the snow swirls
there is a bitter wind
through the single households' double locks
and as Sweden sleeps, villas, forests, lit tracks
Six thousand tree lights against the loneliness
the loneliness
the loneliness
Take a hard line against the loneliness
A whole new light gives us new hope
but the shadows have also become bigger now
Nothing is the same any more
In your world of darkness your failures and my errors are visible
like cracks where the light can penetrate
I realise suddenly one can only see love
when roof and walls collapse in again from the loneliness
The loneliness
the loneliness
Take a hard line against the loneliness
It is so hard to hear what you are saying
What is it you really want to say?

Notes: Don't you feel uplifted now?

&

See what Swedish does? "Sekelskiftesvillan" (the turn of the century villa), "centrumkors" (some kind of crossing or crossroads, Val deduces, probably in the centre of town - "centrum" is often used to refer to a town centre), "ensamhushållens" (the single households' - though of course "ensam", as ably demonstrated by the rest of this song, feels like it has more connotations of actual aloneness than "single" really conveys to me), "utegransljus" (outdoor pine lights, i.e. those lights you can hang on trees in your garden or whatever in winter) - these words do not exist in the usual "in the dictionary" sense! But if the word you want doesn't exist, build it. It's like German in this respect. There's also "elljusspår", which while I've rendered it as "lit tracks" is actually more like running or maybe ski tracks with electric lights strung along beside to light them.

10. Töntarna (The Losers)

on youtube

Swedish lyrics:

Så häng dom högt
Så häng dom långsamt
men häng dom högt
var jag aldrig bjuden in

English lyrics:

So hang them high
So hang them slowly
but hang them high
I demand revenge
An early morning
Born to be a loser
Hang them high
So lie down and cry little sister
just lie down and bide your time now
I know and you know what it is that must happen
and I wholeheartedly believe in your plan
Hang them high
When you cried at the parties
I was never invited inside
You came apart before the guests
I built you up again piece by piece
Piece by piece again
That way I became expert at waiting
one quickly gets used to it when one waits for someone
the foureyes reflects light
and gives you a ride home unconditionally
On the back of my bike you hold me as if in spasm
You landed hard, you were probably always sick
Lie down...
When you cried...

Notes: "Töntarna" is a tough one to translate. I've seen it elsewhere as "the nerds" or "the geeks", but honestly, those words are a bit different - they can have connotations of someone who isn't great at social stuff and all that sometimes, sure, but to me they also imply a lot of technical knowledge and/or or a lot of enthusiasm for a topic. I'm going with "The Losers" here because as I understand it "töntarna" is really more indicative of people who are seen as always doing or saying slightly the wrong thing, never pick quite the right clothes, whatever. It doesn't necessarily imply the other stuff.

&

"glasögonormen" is literally the glasses-wearing snake. I know right. It's a sort of bullying term applied to kids who wear glasses, so "foureyes" is the only real equivalent I can think of, though it makes very little sense there, and so I despair just little. the Swedish has a double meaning, too, because the word is also the name of the indian cobra...

11. Det finns inga ord (There are no words)

on youtube

English lyrics:

Sing songs for me on the radio
Sing for me again, you sounded like rain
Sing songs for me of warm streets
Sing for me again, my heart silent
In my country one must not be superior
This is Sweden and we cry no more
There are no words for it
in this damn language
There are no words for that we
breathe, think, feel the same thing
Sing a song without words about bright nights
Sing for me again, you sounded like snowfall
I hold my breath with you because
I know how you feel
Sing of those times we share a life
with a glance
In our country one must not be superior
This is Sweden, please don't cry where anyone will see
There are no words for it
in this damn language
I have no words for that we
breathe, think, feel the same thing
There are so many here who never said no
and who will never have a chance
so many there who never saw me
and I know that I've had luck like few
So many there who wanted you
but we felt the same thing
we always feel the same thing

Notes: "I mitt land så får man inte vara förmer" / "in my land one must not be superior" is basically related to one of those really Swedish things about not being better than other people, or not thinking yourself better than other people. Work hard & don't get uppity, I guess! Lutheran ideals hard at work.

&

"jävla" is a thoroughly multi-purpose swearword which I believe has something to do, in actual meaning, with "devil", though one would spell the word refering to some kind of satanic being as "djävel", I think. I'm not that well-versed in Swedish religious terminology, I'm afraid.

&

I don't think I can possibly explain how I feel about this song. It borders on deeply embarrassing.

Also, first song I ever took a shot at translating, along with Vals för Satan.

Now I go forth and work on the patio a bit more! Those weeds and dead leaves have to go away eventually. I know there are flower beds at the edges somewhere.
