But maybe I'll need another batch of it, actually. That doesn't look as though it'll make an appropriately ridiculous number of mince pies.

How many mince pies are you planning? You only need about a teaspoon's worth in each one or it will all overflow and push the lids off (voice of experience) . I speak as someone who took two years to get through the enormous amount of mincemeat I made the year before last, which was a pity as making the mincemeat is part of Christmas and it was disappointing not to have to do it.

Well, I have clear memories of using about twice this much the last time I made mince pies. We'll see. (Those are really not very big jars.)

*nods* Pie is important. When it comes to big celebratory dinners, I operate on a one-person one-pie principle: if you don't have an entire pie per person, you do not have enough food.

Brilliant! Of course these are very small pies, so there'll be far more than one per person. (I should not, in theory, go overboard. There will be many other sorts of food! So, so many! We are responsible for at least three or four other kinds of sweet cakey and biscuity things alone! But what is Christmas the much-needed midwinter food-and-light binge for if not going overboard, I ask you.)

I'm not really an enthusiast when it comes to British food, but some things are really ingrained in one, and mince pies when seasonally appropriate? Yeah, right up there. I found making this stuff really comforting, not least because winter means business up here and the lack of light! Oh god! The lack of light! We're so going to need a big party in a month and a half.
